What made you decide to launch your own collection?
I loved what I did in London but I have always dreamt of having my own studio. This dilemma brought me to a crossroads in my life but, upon my new move to Leicester, I saw an opening for the kind of style and service I wanted to offer. Working with the Princes Trust enabled me to do this and they have been fabulous, along with my friends and family.
Describe your style
My style is luxurious fabrics in modern, yet traditional silhouettes with a nod to the latest fashion trends. I love a detailed back as this is the first thing everyone sees, so a lot of my designs focus on this. I ensure that with my designs you are able to go as contemporary as you’d like or keep it simple and sophisticated.
Where did your inspiration come from for the latest collection?
With this collection I was mainly inspired by previous brides. They all said that if they could do it all again they would wear something they were comfortable in and looked like them. So that’s where I started. I did a lot of research into trends that have recurred, red carpet events, what women actually wear and then my favourite part…. fabrics! I tend to work from these, so first I find the fabrics I love and want to use and then I allocate them to my designs.
What is the price range for a bespoke Katie Dell design?
The Waverley Collection starts from £1600. The dresses are fully-made so brides simply order them either as a standard size or made to measure. In addition there is the Margot Collection. This differs as the pieces are made as separates so the bride can mix and match until she finds the perfect combination.
All styles in the two collections can be combined. Fabrics can be changed and extras such as beading, sleeves, trains and much more can be added. Brides can even have two different looks if they prefer. For example, if a bride wanted a long, full skirt with a train for the ceremony and a shorter, lace skirt for the reception then she can have this.
Prices start from £1500 and depend on styles and any amendments made.
What are the stages a bride will experience when buying a bespoke gown from Katie Dell?
I run by appointment only. These last for 90 minutes, giving brides enough time to try options on and style them.
If the bride chooses to order, then measurements and notes are taken. Decisions are also made on whether the dress will be made to order or made to fit. Fabric selection and any other extras required are also discussed.
The order is placed and a first fitting date is set. I always advise 6-months minimum from order to completion. A dress can be made in a shorter amount of time, but a fee will be charged in this instance.
Do you offer bridal accessories?
I have Bridal Accessories from the amazing USA-based Elizabeth Bower. She has the most gorgeous range of hair pieces, belts and earrings. I also have Helen Martin veils which are stunning. The samples I have are in various lengths with lovely different trims which complement my dresses completely.
What are your hopes, ambitions and dreams for the future?
My hopes are to continue adding to my collections, creating more beaded pieces and different, effortless designs. I also want a wall of real brides all wearing Katie Dell for their big day!
I dream of eventually expanding the business to offer bridesmaids and guest outfits along with stocking a shoe designer and more accessories to really offer the whole package from Katie Dell.
