Suzanne Neville | The Interview

Suzanne Neville | The Interview

Suzanne Neville speaks to Buckinghams and gives a sneak peek into the designer life

Award winning British Designer Suzanne Neville is already known as one of Europe’s leading designers of bridal and evening wear. Her gowns have been worn by Tess Daly and Elle Macpherson to name a few. But now, talking exclusively to Buckinghams, ‘Nevsie’ talks about her likes, dislikes, love of the Quality Street green triangle and face-timing with Kate Winslet. It’s all in a day’s work.

Suzanne, tell us something about your background. How did you get started in the wedding dress business? “I began making wedding dresses for friends whilst studying at the London College of Fashion and it just grew from there. I started the business with a Princes Trust grant. It’s what I’d always wanted to do and it’s hard to believe it’s now 25 years ago. There are never enough hours in the day to get as much done as I would like because it’s always so busy. Creating patterns is my biggest passion and seeing brides on their big day.”

Does the responsibility of your business ever scare you? “It doesn’t scare me but I am aware of the huge responsibility it holds. It’s a real honour to dress so many brides for the most important day of their lives.”

How do you start your day? “I start my day with a coffee and a bowl of Granola. I’m a morning person so I’m often up at 5 am and find it hard to stay up past 10 o’clock!!”

What do you do to unwind? “I don’t really unwind. I’m a bit of a workaholic but I do have the odd glass of fizz. Champagne is my favourite tipple.”

Favourite meal? “A beautifully cooked lemon sole is my fave.”

Favourite colour? “Black. It’s pretty much all I wear.”

Favourite mug? “My Cath Kidston giant mug.”

Pet hate? “Things that don’t line up straight – I’m a bit of a perfectionist.”

Are you a dogs or cats person? “Cats! I have 4! They’re my favourite animal!”

Who is your favourite Avenger? Is Iron Man an Avenger?.. if so him as I love Robert Downey Jr.”

Do you have a nickname? My business partner calls me Nevsie!”

Favourite holiday destination? “Italy, New York, anywhere I can enjoy a short break.”

Favourite biscuit? “A bourbon.”

Favourite shoes? “My Valentinos!”

Favourite author? “I don’t have time to read!”

Which is your favourite Quality Street? “The green triangle.”

Coke or Pepsi? “Diet Coke; I’m a little obsessed.”

Do you like Marmite? “I love it!”

Can you cook and if so whats your speciality? “I can follow a recipe but I’m no Nigella.”

Who is the most famous person youve ever met? “I’ve met many celebrities but the only time I felt starstruck was when I was on face-time with Kate Winslet during a fitting.”

Secret crush? “Aiden Turner of course!”

If you could invite four people to dinner who would they be? “Valentino, Joanna Lumley, Graham Norton and Prince Harry.”

Favourite room in the house and why? “My bedroom because I love sleeping.”

What colour is your kitchen? “It’s neutral.”

Favourite household appliance? My Nespresso machine.”

Are you a gardener? “No, but I have a wonderful gardener! I love it because she plants all sorts of beautiful flowers and it’s a lovely surprise when they bloom.”

Can you keep a houseplant alive for more than a month? “Nope – that’s why I need a gardener!”

What do you want for Christmas this year? “Another diamond encrusted ring (I don’t ask for much!).”

What is your proudest moment? Having my children.”

Whats your favourite memory from your wedding? The vows, It was such a romantic moment. I had a winter wedding at Highclere Castle, otherwise known as Downton Abbey, and the setting made the whole experience even more memorable.”

If you werent doing what you do know what would you be doing? “I can’t imagine anything else. It would need to be fashion related.”

If you could change one thing about yourself what would it be? “I would be taller.”

Supplier Spotlight | Baroque Couture

Supplier Spotlight | Baroque Couture

Buckinghams BeLoved Supplier Badge

The wonderful Elaina Evans at Baroque Couture is a Derbyshire based bridal designer creating bespoke bridal gowns and separates for brides both across the UK and internationally. Elaina’s designs promise a truly dramatic entrance for every bride; exclusive, romantic, bespoke statement pieces with beautiful accessories and veils to complement. I’m delighted to publish her supplier spotlight to give you the chance to know her a little better and discover more about her life and passion for design.

Business Profile

Tell us something about your background
Baroque Couture was born out of the desire to use my creativity to the full. The only way to accomplish that was to work for myself. I worked from a studio for a while and eventually I opened the shop in August 2002. While I do advertise and exhibit at wedding fairs many of my clients come from word of mouth. The average price of my gowns is £3000.00 but each one is individually designed for the bride, tailored to her every wish.

It’s a great honour when a bride comes to me to create her special dress, probably the most important dress she will ever wear, and I still get such a thrill as we sit down and begin to talk. We usually start with pots of tea, strawberries and chocolate, then we open the ‘Magic Box’ full of beautiful fabrics and laces. It’s important to me that I get a real feel for the bride to enable me to capture not only her vision but also a little of her unique personality to weave into the design of her dress. It’s an exciting and fun experience to be part of the creating process, and so it should be, whether her dress is an elegant classic design or something more avant-garde. Once the design is sketched I then make up a toile from her measurements. This allows me to perfect the pattern before I move on to cutting into the chosen fabrics. It’s also great fun for the bride to see the process as her dress emerges.

Does the responsibility of your job/business ever scare you?
No. I’m too excited to be scared. Seriously though, if you know your job well challenges are fun.

How far will you travel to a wedding?
The farthest so far has been Kenya. It was a beach wedding looking out over the Indian ocean.

How much contact do you have with a couple before their wedding day?
It rather depends on the bride and her mother, I like to get to know them well so that they feel very comfortable with me.

What’s your price range?
£2500/ £5000

How do couples pay you?
I take a non-returnable design payment to secure their place in the year as I can only do so many gowns and sadly I have to turn people away. The remainder can be paid in two payments before the wedding.

Do you have a cancellation policy for couples’ peace of mind?
Yes, there is a cooling off period written into my terms and conditions.

What’s your favourite memory from a wedding?
Watching the couple saying their vows in a beautiful garden with the Indian ocean behind them, the sound of the waves crashing on the rocks and the photographer so caught up with the moment nearly falling into the sea!

If you could work a celebrity wedding whose would it be?
All of my brides are celebrities to me. I have worked celebrity weddings and they are still just two people in love with the same hopes and fears as the rest of us.

Personal Profile

What do you do to unwind?
I love my garden and I love to cook for my friends so there’s lots of good food, chat and a little wine!

Can you cook? What’s your favourite meal?
Where do I start? I love Italian and Mediterranean food

Favourite colour?
Turquoise – it’s my birthstone

Favourite tipple?
Hendricks Gin and Fever Tree tonic

Pet hate?

Dogs or Cats?
CATS! I have been a cat’s pet for years!

Who is your favourite super hero?
My husband

Do you have a nickname and if so what is it?
‘Angel’ (red face)

Favourite holiday destination?
My French house in the South West of France

Favourite animal?

Favourite author?
J K Rowling, Shakespeare

Coke or Pepsi?
Diet Coke

Do you like Marmite?
Doesn’t everyone?

Favourite memory from your own wedding?
The ceremony. It was very moving and special and there were guests from three musical groups in the congregation so the music was truly celebratory!

If you weren’t doing what you do now, what would you be doing?
Interior design

What advice do you have for brides looking to find a supplier in your category?
It’s one of the most important decisions you will make for the wedding finding the right person to make your dress is vital, choose someone you feel comfortable with and who really listens to you.

Supplier Spotlight | Flowers by Philippa

Supplier Spotlight | Flowers By Philippa

Anyone who knows Philippa Wells, owner and florist at Flowers by Philippa in Leicestershire, knows that within five minutes of meeting up you’ll be giggling uncontrollably about something. If ever Pip’s name comes up in conversation there’s a resounding ‘she’s so much fun’ from anyone who has worked with her, bought flowers from her or even simply exhibited with her at one of our wedding fairs. She is, without doubt, a gorgeous person to have in your life. But enough gushing about this horse jumping, side-saddling, country loving, flower mad dynamo. If we carry on it will all go to her head and the simple truth is that Pip is a fabulous florist; well respected by her peers and loved by her brides.

Buckinghams BeLoved Supplier BadgeTucked away in her Seagrave flower studio, surrounded by open fields and and accompanied by her loyal assistant Dolly (who will insist on being fussed before any mention of flowers is permitted) Philippa works away at her wedding flowers for couples tying the knot in Leicestershire and surrounding counties. She is highly knowledgeable on all things floral and can support even the most confused bride when it comes to deciding which flowers to opt for. I mean for heaven’s sake… where does a girl start?! Thankfully, Pip can answer that question for you.

I have known her since she attended our first ever wedding fair (crikey, that was over five years ago!) and not only is she one of my go-to florists for my personal flowers I am pleased to now call her my ‘friend’. I hope her Spotlight Interview will help you get to know her that little bit more, and you’ll find her contact details at the end of this post, but to really discover what Philippa can offer you for your wedding you need to meet her in person. I urge you to add her to your ‘must see’ list. EJ x

Business Profile

Tell us something about your background
I’m a farmers daughter brought up around dogs, horses and lots of fresh air!

How did you get into this type of business?
My sister actually, she’d seen an advert for a florist and the rest as you say is history! That was 16 years ago!

Tell us when and why you started your business?
February 2013. I’d worked in a florist shop up until then. I’d be working away on someone’s wedding flowers at the back of the shop having never even meet the bride! I love what I do and I wanted to enjoy the journey from the first consultation to actually setting up on the wedding day so I decided to set up my own business.

What do you love least about what you do?
Smelly flower water

What do you love most about what you do?
Seeing all the flowers set up at a wedding. It gets me every time

Does the responsibility of your job/business ever scare you?
Not really, I try and be uber organised and always have a contingency plan

What preparation do you have to do before a wedding?
Conditioning of the flowers is key, giving them a good drink of water before arranging with them is paramount to well behaved and non-droopy florals! Having the walk in fridge is also hugely helpful!

How do you start your day when you’re working a wedding?
A cup of tea

What makes your job a bit easier at a wedding?
Preparation really, knowing where everything needs to go is a real bonus especially with a tight time frame.

What’s your price range?
This is tricky, it depends on which flowers they choose and what they’d like. That’s why I offer complimentary consultations.

How do couples pay you?
Couples initially pay a deposit with them paying the outstanding balance two weeks before the wedding, they can pay via card or BACS.

Do you have a cancellation policy?
There is a cancellation policy which is detailed on our T&C form, I send that out, give couples time to read through then they send it back to me signed and dated – easy peasy!

Personal Profile

What do you do to unwind?
Walk Dolly (my dog), that’s very relaxing unless she runs off!

Favourite meal? Can you cook?
Roast Beef! I do enjoy to cook especially with a glass of wine

Favourite colour?
Blue, but ironically this isn’t the case with flowers.

Favourite tipple?
Hmmm….depends. At the moment Hendricks and tonic

Dogs or cats?

Do you have a nickname and if so what is it?

Favourite holiday destination?
Tuscany Italy, although I’ve only been once it was amazing!

Favourite shoes?
My wellies!

Favourite author?
JK Rowling (Harry Potter addict!)

What are you reading at the moment?
The Da Vinci Code

Do you like Marmite?

Most famous person you’ve ever met?
The Queen!

Which Celebrity’s wedding would you like to be a part of?
Hmmm, this is tricky!  The late but great Sir Roger Moore, that would be some suave shindig, plus I bet he loved flowers!

Best memory at a wedding and scariest moment at a wedding?
Best: There are so many.  I always love to be part of a friend or relatives wedding, it makes me feel very proud to have designed their flowers!
Scariest: I was bridesmaid to my cousin (I did the flowers) we arrived at the church to find out she’d left her bouquet ON THE KITCHEN TABLE!!  Mum had to drive back to retireve it… 10 minutes before the wedding was due to start!

If not married – absolutely MUST HAVE at your wedding?
For everyone to have fun!

What can brides expect from your business if they choose you for their wedding?
For me to be as excited about the flowers as they are – this is way more than just a job to me
